A BBC continuing drama

Holby City was one of those big continuing dramas that almost every British actor seemed to cross paths with sooner or later. It lived in the same fictional hospital world as Casualty, premiered in 1999 and ran until 2022.

A continuing drama has its own rhythm: established characters, long-running relationships and a production machine already moving at speed before a guest actor walks in. Holby followed the professional and personal lives of staff at Holby City Hospital, with long-running characters including Ric Griffin, Jac Naylor, Donna Jackson and Connie Beauchamp across its 23-series run.

The episode

My episode is Apply Some Pressure, Series 12, Episode 31. It was directed by Mat King and first broadcast in May 2010.

Apply Some Pressure centres on a porters’ strike at Holby, with Mark Williams impressing chairman Terence Cunningham as he helps resolve the dispute. Around that, the episode pulls in storylines for Connie, Joseph, Michael and Ric, which is very much the Holby rhythm: professional crisis, personal pressure and everyone already carrying more than they say.
