A strange story to step into
The Alien Autopsy Scandal goes back to the 18 minutes of black-and-white footage that appeared to show officials dissecting an alien body recovered from Roswell, New Mexico. It went around the world in 1995 and became one of the most famous media hoaxes of its time.
The Sky series follows the strange afterlife of the footage: the people who promoted it, the argument over whether anything original ever existed, and the way the whole story still taps into our fascination with UFOs, evidence, fakery and belief.
Playing Spyros Melaris
I play Spyros Melaris, who was a hugely important figure in the creation of the alien autopsy video, and a key part in the story’s long afterlife. Spyros didn’t take part in the documentary, so I lip synced to audio of old interviews he had given. I feel I got to know him a little bit in my research, and I’m really glad his voice got to be heard. I wish I had met him, since I feel like he is a good person, and that he and I would have a lot in common. Maybe one day …
The series is written and directed by the very lovely BAFTA award winning John Dower for Mindhouse and is available on Sky Documentaries and NOW. A lot of people still remember the phrase alien autopsy, even if they have not thought about the story for years, which is part of what makes it such a strange world to step into – but there are plenty of surprises even for people like me, who thought they knew the story!
